Mississippi online sports betting talks are expected to resume in the Jackson capital when lawmakers gather for the 2025 session later this month.
Legislation to expand online sports betting introduced in the state House of Representatives passed through the lower house of the Legislature with strong 97-14 support in early February 2024. However, after that house bill 774 moved to the Senate, the measure was heavily amended before passing the upper chamber 36–15.
A bipartisan conference committee with members of the House and Senate struggled to find common ground. An effort to bring an online sportsbook to Mississippi ended as the Legislature adjourned.
There was considerable disagreement between the chambers over how to license and tax online sportsbooks. Some state senators expressed concern that online books would harm the state’s physical casinos. Others said that if the state wanted to allow online sports betting, why not include online casino games as well?
Although differing opinions remain, Mississippi has limited sports betting to retail sportsbooks at the commercial level. As the American Gaming Association reports, Mississippi’s commercial casinos have an annual economic impact of more than $5 billion, support 33K jobs, and generate more than $760 million in tax revenue per year.
MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, Penn Entertainment, Body Gaming, and Golden Nugget, which have properties in Mississippi, largely support online sports betting. Executives at those firms say online sports betting complements in-person casino gambling and does not harm brick-and-mortar GGRs.
State Senator David Blount (D-Jackson), who chairs the Senate Gaming Committee, told Clarion Laser He has no plans to file the recently filed online sports betting bill in 2025. He said he would not form an opinion on the expansion of sports betting until he read the bill calling for it.
The House has been vocal in favor of expanding gaming in the state, so I don’t know what they might do. I will have to wait and see whether the Senate will consider the bill,” Blount said.
In states where in-person and online sports betting is allowed, most bets are placed remotely. For example, in New Jersey, online sportsbooks took in approximately $11.6 billion in bets between January and November 2024. Physical oddsmakers printed less than $500 million in handles.

2025 extension
2025 was the slowest year to legalize sports betting, as the U.S. Supreme Court in May 2018 overturned a federal law that had limited single-game sports betting to Nevada. Only Missouri passed legislation to bring legal sports betting to the state, which voters approved during the November presidential election.
